QS Ranking by Subjects 2018
Since 2011 Quacquarelli Symonds have been publishing the QS University Subject Ranking in addition to the QS World University Ranking. From around the world, the top 100-200 universities in 36 subjects are identified.
Next to the THE ranking, the QS ranking is one of the most important university rankings in the world. In 2016, RWTH Aachen University was ranked among the best universities in 22 subjects.
A year previously, the subject area Business & Management Studies had been ranked by the QS for the first time and in 2016, the School of Business and Economics at RWTH Aachen University was again ranked amongst the 101-150 group. Germany-wide, RWTH Aachen University again holds second place (together with LMU and TU München as well as WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management). In the category "Statistics & Operational Research", similarly to the previous year, the 101-150 group was reached - fourth place Germany-wide (together with the University of Göttingen).
CHE Ranking 2017CHE
The Centre for Higher Education's (CHE) ranking is the most well known and most detailed ranking system of its kind in German-speaking countries. Apart from evaluating study programs and teaching it also covers students' assessments of study conditions at their respective universities. The CHE Hochschulranking 2017/18 is once again a comprehensive source of information for prospective students who are looking for the university that best suits their needs. The CHE has targeted over 300 universities, including universities of applied science ("Fachhochschulen").
The latest results of the ranking were published on May 9, 2017 in the latest study guidebook for students - ZEIT Studienführer 2017/18 and were also published online. Every year, a third of the subject areas are re-assessed. For 2017, these are the subject areas Business Administration; Law; Social Studies; Economics; Business Informatics; Business Administration and Engineering; Business Law; and Management, Business and Economics. According to various key indicators, the CHE allocates German universities to a top group, a middle group, and a bottom group.
The School of Business and Economics at RWTH Aachen University has again attained excellent results. Amongst other things, according to the sectors "student assessments" and "study facts", the School was ranked in the top group for Business Administration for the following indicators:
- Academic feasibility of programs,
- Support during studies,
- International orientation of the Bachelor program,
- Completion of Bachelor program within an appropriate timeframe.
- Support at the onset of studies.
In the sector "research facts", the School was particularly convincing with regard to the criteria of third-party funding per academic staff member, doctoral degrees, and international publications per academic staff member. The school did not rank among the bottom group for any of the indicators.
For Business Administration and Engineering, RWTH Aachen University was particularly successful with regard to the following criteria:
- Overall study situation
- Academic feasibility,
- Support during studies,
- International orientation.
The CHE ranking reflects student satisfaction with RWTH Aachen University and is a particular acknowledgement of our high standards in teaching and research.
AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) is considered worldwide to be the most renowned international accreditation organization for business education. The School of Business and Economics at RWTH Aachen University was awarded reaccreditation by AACSB on February 11, 2016 and will retain this distinction for the next five years; initial accreditation was awarded five years ago in April 2011.
In alignment with the new set of AACSB standards, which was introduced in 2013, the AACSB review team focussed particularly during their visit on the School's pursuit of innovation, the impact of the School's teaching and research activities on the community, and the continuous engagement of the School's teaching staff.
Prof. Kittsteiner, Dean of the School of Business and Economics, sums the situation up: "Our having gained AACSB reaccreditation is the result of the sustainable improvement processes which we have implemented as well as of our ability to innovate. All the different groups and teams across the School constructively and consistently work together in a most exemplary way to ensure the success of the School".
The reaccreditation process involved, amongst other things, a 3-day visit to the School by an international team of AACSB reviewers. The findings of the team were summarized in a written report, leading ultimately to reaccreditation being granted. During their visit, the team talked to our students, our teaching staff, and other staff. The School's programs of study, quality assurance policies for teaching and research, as well as the School's facilities, were scrutinized and assessed.
The team of reviewers confirmed that the School of Business and Economics consistently implements its mission statement, that it demonstrates an organic collegial culture, and that it integrates the interests of all its different stakeholders. Student involvement was particularly positively highlighted, as was the extensive range of E-learning products and services offered by the School.
In order to hold AACSB accreditation, the School of Business and Economics is subject to a reaccreditation process every five years. In Germany, the School is one of currently only nine business schools to have met the demanding standards set by AACSB. Today, there are 680 university business schools holding AACSB accreditation in 45 different countries. AACSB reaccreditation further backs up the School's excellent national and international ranking positions, e.g.Handelsblatt, CHE, Wirtschaftswoche, or QS World University Ranking.

Continuous Improvement in Handelsblatt Ranking 2014Verlagsgruppe Handelsblatt
On December 15, 2014, the latest research rankings of the German financial newspaper, Handelsblatt, announced the most productive researchers in business administration in the German-speaking countries. More than 2,000 corresponding academic researchers were taken into consideration. Points were allocated for each publication in a specialized journal, whereby the reputation of the relevant journal determined the number of points to be awarded.
Every 2 years, the Handelsblatt publishes three different rankings: "Most productive researchers", "Top 100 researchers under 40", and "Lifetime achievement". In the first category, with the German title of "Beste Forschungsleistung“ , three of the School's academics were nominated this year. Particularly well ranked in an excellent 6th place was Prof. Dr. Malte Brettel. In the second category with the German title of "die besten 100 Forscher unter 40 Jahren", there are also three of the School's academics, all of whom had considerably improved their research performance vis a vis the 2012 ranking. Amongst the top 250 business adminstration researchers nominated for their lifetime achievements, there are six of the School's academics. The best placed amongst these six is Prof. Dr. Harald Dyckhoff, who ranks 36th.
The School of Business and Economics had been ranked 15th best in the business school ranking - with the German title of "Ranking der Fakultäten" - in 2012; for 2014, the School was ranked 12th best, which reflects a pleasing continous improvement! Amongst the German non-private universities, RWTH Aachen University was ranked in an excellent 6th place.
Excellent Results for the School in CHE Master Ranking!
On December 2 this year, the Centre for Higher Education (CHE) published for the first time in the ZEIT-Campus magazine a Master-Ranking for Business Administration. Data gathered for the CHE Hochchulranking in the winter semester 2013/2014 provided the basis for the Master evaluation.
Universities are evaluated according to various indicators: overall study situation, courses and programs available, academic feasibility of the programs, contact between teachers and students, and international orientation of the programs. Similarly to the CHE Hochschulranking system, no places are awarded. Instead, universitites are allocated to a top group, a middle group, or a bottom group
Business Administration also gained excellent results in this new ranking. In all of the indicators, the School of Business and Economics was allocated to the top group. Apart from RWTH University, only three other public universities managed the same achievements.
For the other indicators in the student evaluation which were not published in ZEIT-Campus, Business Administration at RWTH Aachen University has better results than the average of all the evaluated universities. For 11 of the 14 indicators, RWTH Aachen is in the top group. The School's E-learning products and services gained the best result: 1.4: the "weakest" result was in the area of practical orientation - a 2.3.
The School is very pleased that its high teaching standards are reflected in these results.

In 2011, the European Commission created a consortium of European universities and research institutions (hereafter CHE and CHEPS) in order to develop a new system of ranking that would use a broad spectrum of performance indicators for ranking Europe's tertiary education institutions. The concept is based on the methodical preliminary work of the CHE university ranking system and is closely linked to CHE's methodology in many of its basic elements.
The objective was to develop an alternative to the well-known international ranking systems. Since May 2014, the first U-Multirank findings have been available online. About 850 universities around the world have registered to take part in 2014.
In contrast to traditional international ranking systems, which focus mainly on cutting-edge research, U-Multirank looks at different aspects of the Europen university community. The system is multidimensional: rather than providing a general assessment picture, it picks out individual aspects of each university's profile and performance. And rather than individual ranking placements, participants are ranked according to groups. The following 5 categories are relevant:
- Teaching and learning
- International orientation
- Knowledge transfer
- Regional engagement
An innovation of this system is that students are able to compile their own rankings based on their own interests and requirements. They can find information about specific subject areas or specific universitites that they are particularly interested in and select the assessment criteria that fit their own preferences. Data are gathered for the rankings from the universities and their departments as well as from bibliometric analyses and student surveys. As the U-Multirank system is similar to the CHE rankings with regard to methodology, the School of Business and Economics is very successful in the U-Multirank rankings, too.
CHE Ranking 2014CHE
The Centre for Higher Education's (CHE) ranking is the most well known and most detailed ranking system in the German-speaking countries. Apart from evaluating study programs and teaching, it also covers students' assessments of study conditions at their respective university. Every year, one third of the subjects taught are newly evaluated. With over 300 universities ("Hochschulen") and universities of applied science ("Fachhochschulen"), 2,500 departments, 7,500 study programs, 33 subjects, and assessments by students, the CHE ranking is a comprehensive source of information for prospective students looking for the most appropriate university for their studies.
On May 6, the new Hochschulranking 2014 was published online and also in the magazine ZEIT Studienführer 2014/15, and this time it included business administration and business adminstration with engineering. According to various key indicators, the CHE ranking allocates the German universities to a top group, a middle group, and a bottom group, whereby the best and the poorest quarter forms the top and bottom group, respectively.
The School of Business and Economics at RWTH Aachen University gained excellent results: in 11 key indicators, the School was allocated to the top group. These included:
- academic feasibility of the evaluated study programs,
- international orientation of the Bachelor and Master programs,
- Bachelor and Master students completing the programs within the regular time frame.
- publications and third-party funding per academic staff member,
- quality and scope of e-learning products and services,
- student involvement in teaching assessment
- contact with students.
In no indicator was the School of Business and Economics allocated to the bottom group. This excellent result reflects the School's high teaching standards.
Handelsblatt Rankings for Business Administration 2012
The current Handelsblatt ranks the School's business administration programs (2012) 15th in the German-speaking countries and 10th in comparison with other business schools within Germany. With regard to "points awarded per professor", the School ranks 10th amongst the German-speaking countries this year. Seven members of the School's teaching staff are also mentioned in the individual rankings for the top researchers in the field of business administration.

In April 2011 the School of Business and Economics was awarded AACSB accreditation (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). This achievement represents the excellent standards of the School in both its teaching and research activities. Currently, only seven other business schools in Germany have earned AACSB accreditation.
